A small carriage house ADU for a classic Berkeley shingle home. This ADU fits a full studio apartment into a charming little space. We created a very open feeling for a compact footprint by connecting the large outdoor patio with an intentional window layout. We also designed the backyard cottage to double as a home office by incorporating a custom murphy bed / couch unit.
We reimagined the kitchen of this classic Elmwood Craftsman home to include a strong connection to the owner’s beloved garden. Floor to ceiling glass, custom cabinetry and a fully tiled wet bath are highlights of this project. Wide plank white oak floors incorporate radiant heat. Details from the owner’s travels and lives include a custom tile backsplash and built in seating constructed of wind felled Acacia from the property.
"We have had numerous construction/renovation projects done here over the years, and working with Ben & Manzanita Design Build has been as smooth as it gets. Our project involved renovating an existing small cottage (+/- 400sf) separate from the main house. We wanted to open up the space and bring in much-needed natural light. From the start they were very upfront about the timing and the budget and have been right on it for most milestones throughout the project. Ben and the team communicated the inevitable issues that arise with any construction project as soon as possible, offering timely and effective solutions. We are extremely pleased with the results. Ben was great at helping us make critical decisions that would keep the project on track and ensure our new space was aligned with our tastes. We visited showrooms multiple times with him to look at certain materials like tile and flooring, and we valued his taste and input on the advantages and costs of some choices over others. Manzanita Design Build is very pleasant and professional to work with, we can’t recommend them more highly. Finally, maybe the best recommendation we can give is that we were recently contacted by people who stayed in our ADU. They asked for the design so that they could build a cottage just like it in their backyard! We can’t recommend them more highly."
