A small backyard footprint posed a challenge to create an ADU with enough space for long-term guests or rental income. We drew up a two-story design with soaring ceilings, ensuring that the lofted bedroom and compact kitchen spaces do not feel cramped. Large windows harness the connection to the outdoors from all corners of the home. A wall of doors that fully opens creates a seamless link to the outdoors, further expanding the living space.
We reimagined the kitchen of this classic Elmwood Craftsman home to include a strong connection to the owner’s beloved garden. Floor to ceiling glass, custom cabinetry and a fully tiled wet bath are highlights of this project. Wide plank white oak floors incorporate radiant heat. Details from the owner’s travels and lives include a custom tile backsplash and built in seating constructed of wind felled Acacia from the property.
