A family in an Oakland Hills house with a large underutilized basement needed extra room for relaxing and informal socializing. We fulfilled this need, connected the space to a beautiful tree top view, and added value to their property with a fully functional ADU. If needed this space can be used as a separate apartment thanks to a kitchenette, bathroom, and private entrance.
We reimagined the kitchen of this classic Elmwood Craftsman home to include a strong connection to the owner’s beloved garden. Floor to ceiling glass, custom cabinetry and a fully tiled wet bath are highlights of this project. Wide plank white oak floors incorporate radiant heat. Details from the owner’s travels and lives include a custom tile backsplash and built in seating constructed of wind felled Acacia from the property.
"We could not be happier with our 950 sq. foot remodel which transformed our basement dungeon with no windows and a dirt floor into a spacious light-filled family room with outdoor access. Integrated design and construction helped us to quickly resolve a number of complicated structural and electrical issues and make timely decisions that helped keep the project on track. Ben’s keen eye for finishes and penchant for integrating woodwork wherever possible helped create a modern yet warm space that complements the rest of our house and is totally in tune with the Oakland hills. It’s now our favorite place to hang out. The crew were true craftsmen: creative, talented, respectful and hardworking."
