We transformed this large infill site in West Oakland by creating an owner’s apartment with private outdoor spaces, adding income-producing rentals, and creating a shared courtyard for all units. The cornerstone of our design was a wall of floor-to-ceiling glass on the rear setback, creating a private garden oasis in a very urban setting. Gently finished wood and concrete create a contemporary feel with warmth and character. A bathroom utilizes reclaimed redwood for walls & custom cabinetry to provide a dark counterpoint to the bright home. A rooftop deck provides additional garden space and ample sunlight throughout the year.
We reimagined the kitchen of this classic Elmwood Craftsman home to include a strong connection to the owner’s beloved garden. Floor to ceiling glass, custom cabinetry and a fully tiled wet bath are highlights of this project. Wide plank white oak floors incorporate radiant heat. Details from the owner’s travels and lives include a custom tile backsplash and built in seating constructed of wind felled Acacia from the property.
