We turned a large infill lot in West Oakland into a mini compound: private owner’s unit, income-producing rentals, and a central courtyard that ties it all together. The rear setback opens up to a wall of glass, creating a serene garden moment in the middle of the city. Materials like warm wood and raw concrete keep the vibe grounded but contemporary. A standout bath clad in reclaimed redwood adds a moody counterpoint, and the rooftop garden brings in even more green to this urban retreat.
We reimagined the kitchen of this classic Elmwood Craftsman home to include a strong connection to the owner’s beloved garden. Floor to ceiling glass, custom cabinetry and a fully tiled wet bath are highlights of this project. Wide plank white oak floors incorporate radiant heat. Details from the owner’s travels and lives include a custom tile backsplash and built in seating constructed of wind felled Acacia from the property.
